The RLS Guide to Plus Size Fashion

Posted on March 30, 2018

This blog post, Real Life Style’s first comprehensive guide on where to shop for plus size clothing, came about after one of our recent Wear Your Power corporate style presentations. We received a large number of questions about plus size shopping from women of every age, and Kyle and I realized that many women needed the information we had. We couldn’t list every single plus size store out there, but this is a list of some of the newest resources, as well as our favorite go-to options. Do you know someone plus size who needs help pulling together a wardrobe they love? Send them our way for a free 30 minute phone consultation about which of our services might be right for them.

Happy Shopping!

For The Working Woman

Whether your work wardrobe personality is more fashion-forward or more classic, Eloquii has exactly what you need. The brand has become a favorite for plus size women because of its quality and selection.  Not only do they have great work pieces, but they also have casual, trendy, and dressy clothing. Eloquii has stores in Pentagon City, Chicago, and Columbus. I am dying over the lavender “suit”!

MM.LaFleur has been featured on our blog many times, in popular posts about our favorite “jardigan,” their DC showroom, and a 10-piece work wardrobe. Last year, they answered many prayers when they launched their extended sizes collection. Look no further for your new power dresses and sleek pants. And of course the jardigan!

One of our go-to stops for plus size clients is Lord & Taylor, because they carry some of the brands in this blog post (NYDJ, Nic and Zoe), and the work brand Tahari ASL. Tahari always has fun, modern suits and jackets in flattering colors and shapes. Plus, there is always some sort of sale going on or coming up at Lord & Taylor, so this is a great option for those looking to save some money on suits or suit separates.

For a more classic style type, Talbots has great suits, pants, jackets, and casual tops! This is a great shopping destination for your power color dress or suit.

Minimal Avant Garde

Eileen Fisher is a classic for the chic and avant garde. The brand has always focused on clean lines, quality fabric, and modern design. And they have a full size range, from petite to plus size.

Founded in 2015, Universal Standard makes modern, cool clothing from sizes 10-28. While there is a bit of a younger spin on the clothes, most of the pieces could be worn at any age. They have a showroom in NY and Seattle where you can shop the full collection. I can’t get over how chic these clothes are! How insanely cool is the Indra blazer? I’m obsessed!

But by far the most revolutionary part of Universal Standard is their Universal Fit Liberty. The UFL is a core collection of clothing with a “fit guarantee,” meaning if you change sizes within a year of purchasing an item from this collection, you can exchange it for a different size. This allows women to purchase clothing guilt-free, and know that even if their size fluctuates they will not have wasted money on clothing they can’t wear. Their clothing is replaced and then donated to either Dress for Success or First Steps.

Nic + Zoe makes flattering, easy-to-wear clothing for work and weekend. While knitwear is their specialty, the brand also makes flattering but comfortable pants and simple tops in an extended size range. They also just opened a store in Friendship Heights that we love!

Cool and Casual

NYDJ has always been a go-to for our clients who need some stretch in their denim. These are the stretchiest jeans ever, so we’re warning you now to go down at least one size!

.

For casual and business casual, turn to Nordstrom’s plus department, specifically their in-house brand Sejour. We’ve bought trousers and dresses from them and we and our clients have always been satisfied with the style and quality! This is also the place to look for cotton t-shirts and tank tops. Unlike Lord & Taylor, the department in-store is pretty limited. However, they have a very large selection online.

Trendy and Whimsical

Rebel Wilson x Angels is a relatively new line (launched in 2017) carried at Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and Lord & Taylor.  In an interview with WWD, Rebel explained that many of the pieces were designed around styling tricks she learned over the years from her stylists and costume designers. Because it’s still newish, we haven’t seen it in person. We are loving what we’ve seen from the collection online! It’s all about that faux suede trench.

Modcloth has an obvious vintage spin on their clothes, serving primarily a younger market. If you love all things feminine and printed, this is definitely the shopping site for you. A mom was wearing one of these cool printed dresses at my son’s preschool fundraiser and it was a cool, festive look for the occasion.

.

ASOS is a trendy girl’s best friend, no matter what size they are. If you are looking to try out a new style, they carry an iteration of every trend out there, like our favorite art prints and colored suits, in petite, plus, AND maternity.

.

.

High End Designer

11 Honoré curates designer clothing in sizes 10 to 24. They carry Brandon Maxwell, Zac Posen, Michael Kors Collection, and Christian Siriano (who’s become a champion for size exclusivity).  This is a fabulous place for special occasion dresses! And be sure to check out the sale section for super discounted designer pieces.
